Concrete endures the harshest elements of our climate and winter is no exception. With reasonable maintenance your concrete driveways, parking areas, sidewalks and decks can provide years of service and durability. The following care and maintenance guidelines will enhance the value of your investment.

Most concrete damage happens during the winter months. Freezing temperatures will not greatly affect the concrete without the presence of moisture. Precautions that limit the amount of water on and around concrete will lengthen its service life.
Eaves and downspouts can channel water away from concrete.
Filling saw joints with a flexible expansion caulk blocks moisture from vulnerable areas.
De-icing agents should be minimized.
De-icers containing ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate should never be used on concrete. They melt ice and snow, but also attack concrete physically as well as chemically.
During the first winter, avoid parking vehicles on the new pavement as harsh chemicals can accumulate on the undercarriage.
Apply a quality sealer. The presence of a quality sealer can strengthen the concrete surface, resisting abrasion from snow removal equipment, and minimize the amount of moisture that can penetrate into the concrete reducing the likelihood of freeze/thaw damage and chemical attack from deicing agents.
